Fantasy Melbourne rail map

This is my fantasy rail map for Melbourne.

Melbourne Fantasy map

It incorporates a lot of the proposals put forward in the PTV Network Development Plan, some suggestions from others, and some additional thoughts of my own.

In summary:

  • The Network Development Plan proposals are included: Conversion of Regional Rail to a Geelong line, Melton line, Wallan extension, Mernda extension, Doncaster and Rowville lines, changes to loop services, Metro rail tunnels.
  • The City Loop is no more. All services are untangled through the city, with no single line travelling the traditional loop.  The four loop tunnels serve two bi-directional routes (the Maroondah and Port Phillip lines). The Melbourne Metro tunnel serves a single line (Metropolitan), with a second Metro tunnel incorporating the new Victoria line.
  • Two Metro tunnels – the currently under construction Footscray – Hawksburn tunnel and the new Fishermans Bend tunnel from Newport to Merri.
  • Every line traverses the city (except the Knox Valley line) and combines two existing lines, or becomes a new line.
  • The single-seat journey is over. Connections between lines become more common.
  • A new Inner Urban line means that outer suburbs are covered by dedicated express services. Outer services no longer serve stations between Richmond, Caulfield and Camberwell, or West (North) Melbourne, Altona and Williamstown.
  • An orbital network serving cross-town lines. It’s not possible to travel around town on one service, but each line connects to another, usually the next line around.
  • Changes to the Glen Waverley line, splitting at East Malvern to divert via Chadstone to Rowville. The Alamein line becomes the new Glen Waverley line.
  • Station rationalisation. Some stations, usually those very close geographically to another station (or tram). A few stations are relocated, replacing two nearby stations.
  • Lines:

I love it! Usually it is just the same old projects that are just added on, but you have some very interesting ideas that could definately work. I am a train lover myself and I can definately see some of those ideas being used, or at least considered in the future.
